Teenage Cannabis Use Rises in Europe

Cigarette and alcohol use among 15 and 16 year olds is declining across Europe but the numbers using cannabis are growing, an EU survey shows. The report for 2015 includes most EU countries, but not Germany or the UK, and data for Spain is incomplete. In 2015 “current smokers” accounted for 21% of those surveyed, and the highest total was in Italy (37%). In 1995-2015 those using alcohol in the past 30 days fell from 56% to 47%. Party Groups Call For Legalisation Of Cannabis For Medical Use

Marijuana should be made legal in Britain for medicinal use, according to a cross-party group of MP’s and peers who led an inquiry into the drug’s potential to help patients. The recommendation from the group, chaired by Lady Meacher, would put the UK in line with at least 11 other European countries and 24 U.S states where laws already allow people to use the drug to alleviate chronic pain and other symptoms.

New Zealand Police Officer Calls For Reform

A police officer from New Zealand is arguing for the de-criminalisation of cannabis, saying the punishment does not fit the crime. The officer shared his opinion in a September “I Am Keen” column for Police Association Magazine, in which officers have the opportunity to anonymously voice their views on police operations. “People who are stoned are generally quite jovial and the last thing they want to do is fight me,” he said. “That is a very simple reason for me to not treat marijuana possession with the same enforcement enthusiasm I once did.” He says his perspective on the crime has changed over his time as a police officer.

Dog Gets Stoned After Eating Cannabis Cookie!

Peanut, the chihuahua, a dog who had clearly never heard of edibles, got into the stash of an ‘overnight guest’ his friends had over. ‘We had an overnight guest,’ his owner, Reddit user Choices 63, wrote. ‘Our chihuahua found his stash, ate an entire weed-laced cookie. ‘He actually dug it out of a duffel bag. Had to work hard to get it. It was the cookie he was after, not the weed.’

Spanish Group Forms to Strengthen Womens Voices In The Cannabis Industry

In Spain, grassroots social movements have come together to help build a system where individuals can lawfully purchase and consume marijuana. Thanks to activists working from the bottom up, there are now hundreds of cannabis social clubs across the country. Now, a new and long-neglected focus of cannabis culture is finally coming to the fore: feminism. It is hard not to notice the prevalence of men at most cannabis culture and business events. Whether toted around almost as trophies or employed to promote products half-naked – women sometimes are pushed to the industry’s periphery if not excluded altogether. But women, of course, do consume. They do grow. And as the cannabis community evolves, finding a way to strengthen their voice has been a challenge.

Ex Met Officer Is Now Major Player In Medical Cannabis

During almost five years on the beat, patrolling some of the roughest parts of London, Mike Abbott arrested dozens of people for drug offences. As a young recruit he picked up people carrying marijuana on the street in areas such as Brixton, and later participated in undercover operations against major suppliers. ‘The stench of hash was becoming more prevalent,’ he says. ‘My job was to uphold the law and cannabis, like other drugs, was illegal.’ Three decades later, Abbott is a high-flying businessman, yet given his background, there is a certain irony that his latest venture has seen him emerge as among the biggest legal cannabis dealers in the United States.

Certified Pesticide-Free Cannabis Comes to Colorado

Steinkraus (Director of grow operations at Denver Bud Company) explains to inspector Jen Silverman how he cultivates without pesticides. It is the first ever inspection for Colorado’s new pesticide-free certification and Denver Bud Company is the first grower to ever persue it.

For OCA (Organic Cannabis Association) founder John-Paul Maxfield, who also owns Waste Farmers and Maxfields, an organic soil company, creating a pesticide-free certification is all part of the pursuit to make the world a more sustainable place through better agricultural practices. Pesticide-free certification is crucial in helping the cannabis industry catch up with food, he says, and allows consumers to choose their cannabis with the same values they apply to food.

Portland Cannabis Tax to Benefit Local Communities of Colour

November 8, 2016, Portland City voters will vote on the allocation of 3% of recreational cannabis sales tax to a number of causes, including the support of minority owned businesses and communities of color. The current state tax on recreational cannabis sales is 25%. The 2015 Oregon Legislature set the new tax base for recreational sales at 17% beginning January 1, 2017, with a provision that cities and counties may refer a local 3% tax to voters in the 2016 November general election.  On 22 June, Portland City Council voted to refer to voters the 3% tax on recreational cannabis sales. If the vote passes, it will be the first time this type of cannabis tax appropriation to communities of color will be implemented in the U.S. This is extremely important and appropriate, because statistics show that people of color, especially African American men, have born the brunt of prohibition enforcement.

Could Medical Marijuana Break The Painkiller Epidemic?

The iconic pop star Prince was hospitalized 6 days previous to his death after possibly overdosing on Percocet. His death involved overdosing on another painkiller, fentanyl. Both of these are among the prescription opioids that relieve the pain of millions of US Citizens every year, often at the price of their needing ever greater amounts and the risk of overdose. America “is in the midst of an unprecedented opioid epidemic,” according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Prescription opioid overdoses caused more than 165,000 deaths in Americans between 1999 and 2014, and the health and social costs of abusing such drugs are estimated to be as much as $55 billion per year. The DEA Just Delayed This Critical Decision – Bad News for Cannabis Supporters

Source: fool.com

Overall, it’s been a pretty exceptional two decades for the cannabis industry. There have been a few bumps in the road, like the failure of a medical cannabis amendment in Florida in 2014, but as a whole, the increasing acceptance of marijuana has been almost constant since 1996. Since California first legalized medical cannabis for compassionate use in 1996, 24 states have legalized its medical use. This year alone, both Pennsylvania and Ohio have legalized the use of medical cannabis for certain ailments, and they both did so through the legislative process (i.e., without putting the issue on the ballot for voters to decide).

A peek inside the first 420 friendly, all-inclusive art class. Salvador Dali, Allen Ginsberg, Jerry Garcia, Snoop Dogg… I’ve known, for quite some time, that cannabis elevates creativity. Consuming weed spurs divergent thinking in the frontal lobe of the brain. When I change my perception, inventive things begin to happen. That’s why, despite my normal hesitancy towards painting (I tend to be hyper critical of my brush strokes), I was truly excited to try Puff, Pass & Paint at Portland’s Prism House.

Patients Voices Must Be Heard In Cannabis Legalization Debate

Source: huffingtonpost.ca

A quick survey of recent headlines around the legalization discussion, even the federal task force’s press conference, reveals a conspicuous absence: medical cannabis and the patients who rely on it. The current debate and coverage focuses on legalization and regulation combining the interests of everyone from recreational users to growers to government. Without the interests of patients represented in this debate, we run the risk of establishing a future framework that is set up to fail and will require further modification.
